Getting Your Real Estate Life Together: Q&A with Melissa Gomez

Name, Location and how long have you been an Agent

Melissa Gomez, Queens and Long Island, NY, Licensed 18 years- Sales for the past 8 years. Broker since January 2019.

How would you describe your brand?

I would describe myself as someone who genuinely cares about her clients and focuses on educating them as best as possible so that they can make educated decisions when buying or selling real estate. Additionally, as the daughter of immigrants from the Dominican Republic, I’ve geared a lot my content towards helping people understand the importance of building multi-generational wealth.

How do you differentiate yourself?

My work ethic and desire to always do what is right by my clients is what differentiates me most. So many lose focus on the bigger picture or just focus on one commission. Instead, my mission is to help as many people as possible. That’s the beauty of this business, it can be both financially and emotionally rewarding.

What marketing method is most effective for you and why?

Social media- more specifically, Instagram. I believe that you should be where your target demographic is, and that’s where mine are. I don’t have two separate pages (business and personal) because I feel that people want to like the person they are following- and doing business with. They want to “know” who we are and what we do. I’ve also used Instagram as a platform to kick off my vlog #moneymondayswithmelissa where I answer real estate questions that the general public have about buying and selling real estate in the Metro New York and Long Island markets. I am on Facebook and YouTube as well, but have more success via Instagram.

What marketing method is least effective for you and why?

Cold calling. It’s never been my strong suit. I personally find it hard to genuinely connect over the phone with people via cold calling.

What are your three favorite ways to start a conversation?

I’ve been known to eavesdrop on conversations, then say “I can’t help but overhear, but just wanted to let you know I’m a real estate agent”. Aside from that, laughing at something someone says that may be funny or just saying hi always work. I am a high D personality, so there are times it’s hard for me to stay engaged with people via small talk. I think it’s important to be as relatable as possible. So, there’s no one-sized fits all approach. I try to have a genuine connection with the people, and then take it from there.

How are you elevating the look and feel of your business?

I’m always looking to improve. I do frequent social media audits as well as any print material. I tend to look at things from the eye of the consumer and say how would I like it to be or look. My focus this year will be to upgrade the quality of my videos. I’ve also been working on a lot of customized content for the rest of my agents as well, like personalized marketing brochures and promo videos. Video content is so powerful thru any medium.

What's one piece of advice you would give a new agent?

Seek a mentor. There are so many things involved with the ins and outs of this business. It’s an easy business to get into, but hard to stay in. We are a business within a business, but that also means that the likeliness of failure is high. So, having someone that help guide you is a huge asset to have. They will be able to coach you thru the roller coaster that is real estate so that you don’t give up.
